Most spots around Gettysburg look best during “golden hour” — the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. The light is softer, colors are richer, and you don’t get harsh shadows. For fields and open areas, sunset is usually ideal. Downtown can work a bit earlier or later depending on the light and the season.

Wear something you’re comfortable moving in and that feels like you. Neutrals and solid colors usually photograph best, especially against brick, trees, and open fields. For families, think coordinated but not matching. For seniors and couples, bring one outfit that’s a bit more dressed up and one that’s more relaxed if you’d like options. It also helps to bring comfortable shoes for walking, water, and a jacket if it’s cold.

Gettysburg National Military Park is a protected site, so there are specific rules around professional photography and where we can shoot. For simple sessions in public areas we may not need a permit, but for certain locations, larger setups, or anything that looks like a commercial shoot, the park can require permission or a permit.

If you’re interested in using the battlefield as a backdrop, we’ll talk through what you have in mind and then check the current guidelines from the park before we lock anything in.

If the forecast looks rough heavy rain, storms, or dangerous heat we’ll talk a day or two before your session and decide whether to adjust the time, switch locations, or reschedule. I’d rather move things than force a session where everyone is miserable.

That said, if it’s just rain or snow with no lightning, that can actually make for some really fun, moody photos. If you’re up for it, we can lean into the weather instead of running from it and plan a session that embraces the umbrellas, snow, and puddles.
