The Story
Every pirate legend begins with a tale of gold, curses, and adventure, and ours is no different. For Episode 4 of Reel to Real: Movie-Inspired Photoshoots, we set sail on a journey inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean. But this is no ordinary tale of swashbuckling pirates—this is Captain Lexie’s story. The narrative follows Captain Lexie as she discovers a cursed coin hidden deep within the fort walls. At first mortal, human, and free, she becomes immortal as the curse takes hold. Instead of fearing it, she accepts the transformation and wields it as her greatest power. This photoshoot isn’t just about pirates—it’s about creating a world of adventure, mystery, and cinematic flair.
How we pulled it all together!
We pulled inspiration directly from The Curse of the Black Pearl, incorporating:A cursed transformation: Captain Lexie’s skeletal reveal mid-shoot. Historical settings: The fort in St. Augustine provided the perfect backdrop, rich with pirate lore and cinematic appeal. Subtle nods: A coin resembling the Aztec treasure, weathered pirate attire, and timeless details reminiscent of Jack Sparrow’s world.
Creating Tortuga in St Augustine Florida
We started our day well before dawn, leaving Orlando at 4:30 AM to make it to the beach before the sun came up. The soft light of sunrise on the water set the perfect tone for the opening shots—a calm, ethereal contrast to the adventure ahead. From there, we traveled to Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. The fort carried the exact atmosphere we needed for a Pirates-inspired story. Ancient stone walls, sprawling cannons, and whispers of real pirate history made this location feel like a set straight out of the Caribbean. Shooting here during daylight allowed us to take advantage of the natural light and textures—but in post-production, we gave it a darker, moodier look to mimic nightfall on the high seas.
We broke down the location into three essential elements:
- The Setting: The fort’s arches, shadows, and stone paths became the perfect stage for Captain Lexie’s tale.
- The Lighting: While the weather didn’t offer a cinematic storm, we played with hard daylight and transformed it into eerie moonlight using Adobe Photoshop.
- The Details: A cursed coin, Lexie’s flowing pirate coat, and the fort’s historic cannons grounded the shoot in the Pirates universe.
The Transformation and the Curse
The big moment in this shoot was Lexie’s skeletal transformation. While the cursed skeleton crew in The Curse of the Black Pearl relied on movie magic, we leaned into a combination of clever posing, dramatic lighting, and post-production wizardry. The sequence starts with Lexie as a mortal pirate, full of grit and determination. As the story progresses, she finds the cursed coin, and the big reveal—her skeletal form—comes to life. In Adobe Photoshop, we blended Lexie’s human features with subtle skeletal overlays, creating a haunting, powerful moment that symbolized her transformation—not as a loss of humanity, but as an embrace of her newfound power.
