High Humidity & High Speed: Capturing Dickinson Swimming at Gettysburg
Every sport brings its own unique rhythm, but shooting an all-day swim meet is a masterclass in adaptation. Photographing the Dickinson College Red Devils as they competed on the road at Gettysburg College presented an exciting challenge—starting with the intense, tropical humidity of the indoor pool facility. Once the glass warmed up and the cameras acclimated, the focus shifted entirely to the water.
Swimming is one of the most explosive yet fleeting sports to capture. Between the wall of water sprayed on every stroke, blinding light reflections off the surface, and swimmers submerged for half the race, timing is everything. Freeze-framing the exact split-second an athlete breaks through the surface for air requires high shutter speeds, sharp tracking, and an eye for the emotional beat of the race.
Throughout the all-day event, the energy on the pool deck never wavered. From the tension on the starting blocks to the roar of teammates cheering along the lanes during the final relay legs, the Dickinson squad brought incredible drive to every event.
Below are highlights from the meet—capturing the speed, water spray, and grit of Dickinson College swimming in action.
